Working with our community
Murray LLS is a strong advocate for local people participating in local land management activities both through formal mechanisms such as being a member on our Local Community Advisory Group and being involved in local Landcare or community groups.
Through funding from the Australian Government under the National Landcare Programme, the MLLS Communities Program actively seeks to increase the capability of community groups within the region so they can manage and care for the land. In turn, the community helps MLLS to deliver NRM, sustainable agriculture, biosecurity and emergency management services across the region.
The Communities in our Landscape Program is aiming for community-led sustainable agriculture and natural resource management through;
- local group support
- coverage of groups across the region and
- diversity of groups (& interests) being supported
It focuses on a regional network of community support, including MLLS Community Engagement staff, the Regional Landcare Facilitator, Community Support Officers and Local Landcare Coordinators. Investing in group capacity is considered part of an effective program to support land managers to care for and steward land. MLLS invests in the capacity and engagement of community groups through a number of different programs, including:
- Murray Landcare
- Regional Group Capacity Program
- Community Small Grants
- Community Education Programs
