Deniliquin-Moulamein Spring Fox Baiting Program

Group fox baiting started 20 years ago. Murray LLS works with landholders in a coordinated fox baiting program in spring to target pregnant vixens as part of its twice yearly baiting program to reduce fox populations at the optimum time.

Baiting is undertaken by Forests NSW and National Parks & Wildlife Service at the same time and Murray LLS also times fox baiting on TSRs to coincide with farmers' baiting programs. The baiting program is funded from rates.

Achievements

  • Local farmer Coordinators organise 17 collection points for farmers to collect their baits.
  • Murray LLS Biosecurity Officers promote baiting and organise baits.
  • Murray LLS District Veterinarians attend each meeting to discuss animal health activities and answer questions.
  • 10,000 baits are distributed annually.
  • Vertebrate Pest Induction Training available from Biosecurity Officers.
  • Greater awareness regarding the requirements for using fox baits.
  • This is an ongoing program with fox baiting occurring in autumn and spring.
