Destination only zone increased for travelling stock
19 June 2015
Murray Local Land Services today announced there will be an increase to the area of the Destination Only Zone for travelling stock in the western half of the Murray Local Land Services Region.
From Monday 29 June 2015, the area of the Destination Only Zone restricting the use of travelling stock reserves by travelling stock will be increased to include:
- For locations north of the Billabong Creek.
- All travelling stock reserves west of Colombo Creek.
- For locations south of Billabong Creek.
- All travelling stock reserves west of and including Federation Way.
'Destination Only' means travelling stock must have a genuine point of destination that is able to receive the stock. The travel rate must be 10km per day and no slow travel will be permitted. Destination Only does not restrict local routine stock movements between properties.
Permits for travelling stock within the Destination Only Zone are limited to one per owner at a time and generally include increased restrictions to maximum mob sizes.
Once an owner has used a permit for travelling stock within the Destination Only Zone, they are not allowed to use another permit for travelling stock to re-enter the Destination Only Zone until four weeks after their stock have either exited the zone or returned to their "home" property.
Manager Land Services, Helen Wilson, said that the area of the Destination Only Zone was being increased to reflect ongoing unfavourable climatic conditions.
"The area of the Destination Only Zone is being increased to include the Murray Local Land Services Region south of the Billabong Creek between the Newell Highway and Federation Way.
"Restrictions to travelling stock reserves are currently necessary to reduce grazing pressure and ensure the long term sustainability of the reserves."
"Recent rainfall will help the current situation however the reserves will still need time for grass to grow.
"The rate of grass growth will be limited during the winter period while temperatures are low.
"If closure of some reserves is required sometime over the coming months, this will not impact local routine stock movements.
"Murray Local Land Services is continuing to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as conditions change," she concluded.
Stock owners or managers in the affected areas can get further information from their local Murray Local Land Services offices in Deniliquin, Jerilderie and Moulamein.
