Autumn baiting targeting young foxes
12 February 2016
The agency will begin distributing baits to participating property owners during late February and March, with the landholder program to be complemented by baiting in forests in the western area by the Forestry Commission NSW and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
Baiting will also take place on more than 20 travelling stock reserves in the Jerilderie area between March and May, meaning people need to exercise caution with dogs and children when entering the reserves.
Murray Local Land Services Biosecurity Officer, Stephen Wilson, said the autumn and spring baiting programs effectively reduced fox numbers.
“Our autumn baiting targets young foxes seeking new territory, and we find that coordinated baiting prior to lambing increases the survival of the lambs,” he said.
“It’s a valuable program that not only improves farmers’ income, but also helps preserve the native fauna in the area.”
Landholders in the eastern region can order baits by phoning (02) 6051 2200 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The baits will then be distributed at specific locations throughout the region during March.
Landholders in the Deniliquin area can order baits by phoning (03) 5881 1055 or emailing email@example.com. The baits will then be distributed at specific locations throughout the region during late February and early March.
Landholders in the Jerilderie area can order baits by phoning (03) 5886 1203 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The baits will then be distributed at specific locations throughout the region during March.
Mr Wilson said it was important for landholders to carry the appropriate accreditation to be able to collect and use 1080 bait material, and could contact Murray Local Land Services to arrange the necessary training.
Murray Local Land Services will run induction training in vertebrate pest control (1080) in Bunnaloo, Deniliquin and Moulamein. Please phone (03) 5881 1055 for more information or to book.
