Assistance available as storm declared 'disaster'

The NSW Government has declared a damaging storm that moved through the Deniliquin-Jerilderie area in early December to be an Agricultural Natural Disaster, paving the way for affected landholders to access assistance.

The damage caused by the storm “easily surpassed” the cost threshold for triggering the declaration, according to Murray Local Land Services Manager of Biosecurity and Emergency Services, Geoff Corboy.

“The damage reported and assessed to date tops $6.3 million, but the total damage is likely to be far higher as further reports are received,” he said.

Mr Corboy said that low-interest loans and freight subsidies were now available to eligible landholders through the Rural Assistance Authority. Landholders can find out more about the declaration, their eligibility and the available assistance at the RAA website, or by phoning 1800 678 593.

Murray Local Land Services provided an overall damage assessment report to NSW DPI to allow the declaration to be made. Mr Corboy thanked those landholders who provided reports of damage, which allowed the report to be submitted promptly.
